Nova: Formatting Text

Overview

Nova does not parse text formatting written in a rich text editor such as Microsoft Office, Apple Pages, or GDocs, etc. Therefore, we have to manually HTML code in order to format text. There are numerous HTML tags that will do this, but we only need to worry about using the ones for bold and italics.

  • <strong> – Bold or Important text
  • <em> – Italicized or Emphasized text
  • <mark> – Marked text
  • <small> – Small text
  • <del> – Deleted text
  • <ins> – Inserted text
  • – Subscript text
  • – Superscript text

All HTML tags must have an opening tag and a closing tag that surrounds the text you wish to format. For example: <b>Bold Text</b>.

Exceptions to the HTML opening and closing tag rule: <hr> inserts a visible horizontal line and should be placed at the end of the string of text where you want the line positioned. <hr> automatically inserts a line break so remember to compensate for that by not adding a line break.

If you are writing in GDocs: To make it easier for whoever is editing and uploading posts to the website, please add the HTML tags to text you want emphasized with bold or italic formatting and also use the Rich Text Editor to make the changes visible.

Example: Please make your text <strong>Bold</strong> or <em>italicized</em> so that the person editing a post can easily see it.
