This is a very tricky topic to write guidelines for. We do not allow superhuman type psychic abilities like you would have with some Marvel and DC comics superhuman characters. In fact, the character’s abilities, if any, should be restricted to those that would not be save the day, save the world abilities. In general, if adding paranormal abilities to your character, they need to be passive and low-impact.
When we talk of paranormal abilities, this includes anything that is over and above average for most people, the character’s schtick, so to speak. For example, on average, most people do not make particularly good eyewitnesses because the mind tends to overwrite what was actually observed and heard. People can be trained to enhance their normal powers of observation making it a paranormal ability. A great example is from a Dick Francis novel. In it, the main character, as a child, spent long hours waiting in the car while his mother did the family shopping. To combat boredom, he made a game of memorizing his surroundings in excruciating detail in case there was a bank robbery and he was asked to describe the robbers, other eyewitnesses, and the general scene. This became an ingrained ability and, later in the character’s life, became a valuable asset. Following this example, for our purposes, abilities such as eidetic memory (aka photographic memory) become a paranormal ability.
In other words, your character can have paranormal abilities without having psychic abilities.
When you get to the section on Paranormal Abilities in the SSI CHARACTER CREATION FORM, you would add any such abilities there.
Please read carefully and pay CLOSE attention to the LIMITATIONS on each. If it is not on the list, it is likely not allowed, but you may contact us to discuss it.
The organization that examines the question of PSI abilities in the most scientific manner is the Parapsychological Association (PA), which is an affiliate of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Within the PA’s online encyclopedia, they’ve published an article by Dr. Mario Varvoglis where he defines “psi” as every kind of unexplainable psychic phenomenon that “seem to be related” to the human mind. He further quantifies that by defining what it means to be “psychic”. Dr. Varvoglis calls it an experience that “must involve” interactions that aren’t the same as our normal methods of interacting with the world around us. In other words, the scientific definition of types of “psychic abilities” refers to those abilities to perceive things about the world through a “sixth sense”. This is why types of psychic abilities are referred to as extrasensory perception.
The technique that many clairvoyants use to pass information from the spiritual world through their subconscious mind and onto paper. The theory is that the psychic’s hand is ultimately controlled by the outside intelligence.
This ability would be acceptable with major limitations regarding how, when, why and where it can occur.
This is similar to automatic writing, except instead of the outside spiritual intelligence controlling the psychic’s hand, it take over the vocal chords of the psychic. People who have this ability are called “mediums” because they serve as a medium, or vessel, for communication to take place with the invisible entity.
We do not allow abilities of this type as a form of communicating with the dead. If you can devise another way it works, we’d be open to discussing it.
To reach into another vibrational frequency and visually perceive “within the mind’s eye” something existing in that realm. A clairvoyant is one who receives extrasensory impressions, and symbols in the form of “inner sight” or mental images which are perceived without the aid of the physical eyes and beyond the limitations of ordinary time and space. These impressions are more easily perceived in an alpha state and during meditation, though many clairvoyants can obtain visual information regarding the past, present and future in a variety of environments.
In its purest sense, this would not be allowed. In other words, Joe-Bob may not stare off into the distance and see the enemy’s base and draw us a map to it. Some variations on clairvoyance are acceptable, particularly when used in conjunction with some of the abilities listed below.
To perceive sounds or words and extrasensory noise, from sources broadcast from spiritual or ethereal realm, in the form of “inner ear” or mental tone which are perceived without the aid of the physical ear and beyond the limitations of ordinary time and space. These tones and vibrations are more easily perceived in an alpha state and during meditation, though many clairaudients can obtain verbal and sound-related information regarding the past, present and future in a variety of environments. Most Channelers (also known as Mediums) work with both clairvoyance and clairaudience.
As long as you’re not hearing dead people, we’ll discuss it.
To perceive information by a “feeling” within the whole body, without any outer stimuli related to the feeling or information. (Also see clairempathy).
This ability actually has more lenience than the others and can be used in various ways that are more acceptable to our game world. A character exhibiting a form of this ability may just appear to have great instincts when it comes to certain things such as computers and programning.
An Empath is a person who can psychically tune in to the emotional experience of a person, place or animal. Clairempathy is a type of telepathy to sense or feel within one’s self, the attitude, emotion or ailment of another person or entity. Empaths tune into the vibrations and “feel” the tones of the aura.
With appropriate limitations to mitigate OOC knowledge and god modding, this is an allowable ability.
Dowsing is an age-old art of using rods or sticks to locate objects. This was a technique used for many decades to locate water. Many older folks swear that it works, but no one can really explain why.
Very few. This ability has practical uses for our game world and is low-impact in regard to other characters.
This is an innate “sense” of events, thoughts, activities or feelings of others that are outside of the normal human ability to perceive them. For example, someone with extraordinary intuition may have a very strong feeling that someone they just met has a drinking problem even though the person shows no outward appearance of being alcoholic. An intuitive person has a borderline psychic perception.
As with many of the others, this ability is open to discussion. We would prefer it be focused and not general so that it doesn’t cross the line into OOC knowledge and god modding.
This is the ability of a psychic to perceive energies (also called vibrations or impressions) from an object. This ability has been portrayed often in movies and TV shows where a psychic touches an object and receives flashbacks about the person who last touched it.
This ability has merit and usefulness but would need severe limitations placed on it in the character’s bio to avoid god modding and OOC knowledge.
